Huzzah!!! Galavanters received the wonderful news we’ve been praying for when ABC renewed “Galavant” in early May. Fans, cast members and even creator, Dan Fogelman, remained optimistic despite nay-sayers deeming that the ratings weren’t solid enough to earn a second season. Now that Season 2 is officially a go and production is underway, Fogelman expresses how he truly feels about those doubters with his tentative title for the first episode.
Today (June 2, 2015) he tweeted the script title page, which hilariously states what fans are all thinking, “A New Season aka Suck It Cancellation Bear.” Or as “Psych-O’s” would harmoniously put it: “Suck iiiiiit.” Realistically, the title probably won’t stick. Nonetheless, Fogelman has us laughing again from the very start. Now we can sit back and have some more fun pondering all the amusement Team “Galavant” has in store for us.
ABC teases us with this brief synopsis posted on “Galavant’s” official website:
Screenwriter/executive producer Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love; Tangled; Cars) reunites with Broadway and Hollywood award-winning musical team — composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid, Tangled) — for the return of last season’s breakout musical comedy extravaganza, Galavant. Having discovered the dark side of Madalena, our dashing hero’s adventures continue as he embarks on an unlikely bromance with King Richard and fights to rekindle the romance with his true love Isabella.
Galavant stars Joshua Sasse as Galavant, Timothy Omundson as King Richard, Vinnie Jones as Gareth, Mallory Jansen as Madalena, Karen David as Isabella and Luke Youngblood as Sid.
Dan Fogelman, Alan Menken, Glenn Slater, Chris Koch, Kat Likkel and John Hoberg serve as executive producers. Abbey C Studios Ltd. Produces “Galavant” for ABC Studios.
If you follow the delightful cast and hardworking crew of writers and musicians, then you already know that Al Menken, Glenn Slater and Co. are in the writers room cranking out some new sassy and catchy tunes (as you can see HERE.) The first season featured grand numbers that poked fun at this genre’s stereotypes and painted a vivid picture of how gruesome medieval times truly were. Plus, each cleverly crafted tune was stuck in our heads for days. Just talking about it probably has your favorite song playing on loop again right now. You’re welcome.
Another stellar score is expected and it will be shocking if “Galavant” doesn’t take home some awards for their musical achievements at the very least. Last season showcased witty and hypnotic songs that captured various musical genres. Ricky Gervais channeled Queen in a psychedelic trippy rock ballad, “Weird” Al Yankovic dabbled in doo-wop, Hugh Bonneville had us rolling on the floor with a hysterical pirate shanty, Joshua Sasse and Karen David made us swoon with their cheeky love song, Timothy Omundson had us in tears with a weepy lullaby, and Mallory Jansen exercised her powers of seduction with a saucy tango. Just to name a few, so we can only imagine what Season 2 will bring.
Perhaps Sid can break into a hip rap number, while blossoming BFFs, King Richard and Galavant, channel a little bit of country and a little more rock. Isabella could belt out a killer Heart-style rock ballad from her pink prison. Madalena can get all jazzy now that she’s taken over the throne. With a dream team like Menken and Slater and such a talented cast, the options are endless. What kind of songs would you like to see “Galavant” tackle next season? Are there any other genres begging for a medieval makeover?
Looking at the impressive list above, we realize how this show luckily scored some awesome guest stars. Upon “Galavant’s” renewal, John Stamos immediately took to twitter and asked to reprise his role as snarky knight, Sir Jean Hamm. Fogelman’s response indicates that he hopes to have Gervais, Yankovic and Bonneville back again as well. Even before the renewal, Fogelman was working on assembling his dream cast of guest stars.
On April 23 he tweeted, “Just asked my first massive guest star to do #Galavant season 2…Guesses?” He later teased that the mystery star is female. What are your thoughts Galavanters? Any idea who this enigmatic actress could be? Emma Thompson? Barbara Streisand?
During the guessing game, Fogelman revealed that he’s dying to get John Cleese to appear on the show and will keep on trying. Cleese is also on Omundson’s wish-list, along with another “Monty Python” alum, Eric Idle. Let’s add a few more suggestions, just for fun.
Cary Elwes (of “The Princess Bride” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” fame) would be a perfect fit on the show. It would also be wonderful to see him team-up with Omundson again. Perhaps “Galavant” could stage a little “Psych” reunion and have James Roday,Dulé Hill, or Maggie Lawson make an appearance. Fans would squee with glee. Billy Connolly would also be an excellent choice, he definitely has the humor and rhythm for it. In the spirit of network comradery, it would also be cool to see “Forever’s” Ioan Gruffudd. He has the makings of a noble knight with a sweet singing voice (not that we want Gal to have any competition.) Who would you dream cast in Season 2? Share your wish-list below!
There is so much to look forward to! Especially since “Galavant” left us hanging on all fronts. Thankfully, we’ll have the chance to see Fogelman’s vision play out. There will surely be loads of laughs at King Richard and Galavant’s expense now that they are embarking on a buddy adventure. They make quite the dynamic duo, particularly after a night of heavy drinking (shhh it’s a secret). We really hope that Gareth is still loyal to King Richard and is only going along with Madalena’s crazy charade to help get his pal back on the throne. He’s holding Sid as insurance to make sure Gal doesn’t let him down, but maybe Gareth will put Sid to good use. Perhaps the surly knight and the timid squire can take Madalena down together. Then we have sweet Isabella. As we learned in Season One, this damsel does not distress. This kick-ass princess is more than capable of getting out of a jam, but a little help never hurts. Who will come to Izzy’s rescue? Can Richard and Gal find a way to break her free and take back the kingdom? What kind of kooky characters will they meet along the way? We can’t wait to find out!
“Galavant” returns to ABC during “Once Upon A Time’s” winter hiatus and will air Sundays at 8 p.m.
