‘Sleepy Hollow’ scoop: Sleepy Heads hit the books with ‘Sleepy Reads’

Can’t get enough of ‘Sleepy Hollow’? Well you’re in luck, Sleepy Heads! We will get to experience our favorite new supernatural drama on a plethora of literary platforms. Brace yourselves for “Sleepy Reads.”

What a “novel” idea

There are two types of literature in the works to accompany FOX’s hit series. First up is “The Secret Journal of Ichabod Crane,” written by Alex Irvine. The journal will offer fans insight into Ichabod’s deep and personal thoughts. Here’s the official description posted on Amazon:

“I am Ichabod Crane, born in the year 1747. It seems this is the year 2013 Anno Domini, and I have been given new life—how, I know not; why, I know not. I will discern the truth—if, that is, I can keep my head.”

In “Sleepy Hollow,” a supernatural twist on Washington Irving’s classic short story, Ichabod Crane has been pulled two-and-a-half centuries through time to find that he and detective Abbie Mills are humanity’s last hope in the war against evil. Passionate, intelligent, and wryly funny, Crane has always used journals to collect thoughts and documents that may prove useful later, and The Secret Journal of Ichabod Crane offers an unprecedented look at the battle also raging inside his fascinating mind.

On the pages within, Crane shares new memories of the American Revolution; more amusing reflections on modern-day phenomena, from the Internet to Election Day; and private thoughts about Abbie, Katrina, and others. He also includes hidden case files; secret Freemason puzzles; selections from George Washington’s mysterious Bible; and photos, letters, and drawings he has collected along the way. Filled with detail about past battles and vanquished monsters, as well as clues about those he and Abbie have yet to face, this journal is not just the ultimate repository for fans, but the key to Sleepy Hollow’s future—and the world’s.

Sounds awesome, right?!

Fun fact for SuperSleepy fans: Irvine also penned “Supernatural: John Winchester’s Journal.” I absolutely loved that text. It captured John’s essence and shed some more light on the boys’ childhood. Seriously you guys, it was so good that it made me cry. The well-crafted journal beautifully brought the Winchesters to life in a whole new way and I have no doubt Ichabod’s journal will do the same for ‘Sleepy Hollow’s’ unique protagonist. This captivating compilation of Crane’s quirky thoughts is a very welcomed accompaniment to the series. Crane’s journal will give us a better understanding of how Ichabod truly views our world and I can’t wait to read it.

“The Secret Journal of Ichabod Crane” will be available on September 16 and you can pre-order it here on Amazon.

UPDATE: Read an excerpt from Ichabod’s journal HERE.

Following Ichabod’s intriguing journal, we will get our very first ‘Sleepy Hollow’ novel, providing more fascinating historical twists and another entanglement with the crazy witch, Serilda (who appeared in the second episode, “Blood Moon”).

Here is Amazon’s description of Keith R.A. DeCandido’s novel, “Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution”:

When Ichabod Crane, a soldier from the Colonial Army, is resurrected from his grave, more than two centuries after he was killed in battle, he partners with Lieutenant Abbie Mills of the Sleepy Hollow Police Department to fight the evil forces that have taken hold of the town.

It’s a cold day in January, and Ichabod visits Patriots Park for a moment of peace. Instead, he receives a disturbing vision from his wife, Katrina, in which she delivers a cryptic but urgent message: he must retrieve the Congressional Cross that he was awarded by the Second Continental Congress for bravery in action. There’s just one problem: Ichabod was killed before he ever received the medal, and he is unsure where it might be. Together Ichabod and Abbie set out to uncover the mystery of the cross and its connection to George Washington and his secret war against the demon hordes. They soon learn that a coven of witches is also seeking the cross in order to resurrect their leader, Serilda, who was burned at the stake during the Revolutionary War. Now they must locate the cross before the coven can bring back Serilda to exact her fatal revenge on Sleepy Hollow.

It is a clever idea to expand on a story we touched upon in the series. There were only so many narratives that could have been told within the confines of thirteen episodes, so I like the thought of exploring some of the show’s stories in more depth with tie-in novels.

“Sleepy Hollow: Children of the Revolution” will be available on September 30 and you can pre-order it here on Amazon.

UPDATE: Read an excerpt from the novel HERE.

Honestly, the only thing that would make these tie-ins even better is if Tom Mison narrated the audio books. I desperately hope somebody out there can make it happen. Sleepy Heads around the world are melting at the mere thought of it.

Ok collect yourselves, Sleepy Heads, there’s more good news ahead.

‘Sleepy Hollow’ Comic Book

BOOM! Studios tweeted a teaser revealing that a ‘Sleepy Hollow’ comic is in the works. Comic Book Resources states:

BOOM! Studios has released a new teaser that indicates comics based on FOX’s sophomore drama “Sleepy Hollow” may be in the pipeline. The image by “Polarity” artist Jorge Coelho features the Headless Horseman in the foreground and two characters that bear a striking resemblance to Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane and Nicole Beharie as Lieutenant Abbie Mills. However, no further information was included with the teaser.

Created by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Phillip Iscove and Len Wiseman, “Sleepy Hollow” debuted in 2013 to critical acclaim and quickly became a fan favorite in its first season. A reimagining of Washington Irving’s classic short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the series follows a future-displaced Ichabod Crane, a soldier in George Washington’s colonial army, and his partnership with modern-day Sleepy Hollow police lieutenant Grace Abigail “Abbie” Mills. The series follows the duo as they fight to stop the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse amidst supernatural phenomena.

The stunning illustration looks very cool and I really like the eerie glimpse of Ichabod and Abbie through the Headless Horseman’s towering legs. But I’m not going to lie, we all know that Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie are way better looking than their comic book counterparts. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what story the comic book will tell. What do you think of the sneak peek image?

Hopefully BOOM! Studios will release more information on the comics sometime soon.

UPDATE (June 30, 2014)

Comic Book Resources releases details on the upcoming ‘Sleepy Hollow’ comic book series.

The first issue will be for sale on October 15! CBR News explains:

The comic, a four-issue miniseries written by Marguerite Bennett (“Butterfly,” “Superman: Lois Lane”) and drawn by Jorge Coelho (“Polarity,” “Venom”), spins an all-new tale starring the characters from last season’s hit genre mash-up. Joining them for the ride is Noelle Stevenson of “Lumberjanes” fame, who will write and illustrate back-up stories for each issue. …

In the first, CBR exclusive interview about the project, Bennett explains that as a fan of the series, her stories are the result of picking up bits and pieces from episodes and building off of them, though she remains tight-lipped about the details. She also talked about working with Coelho to bring the show to a new medium, building her story inside the structure of the TV series and the role Grant Morrison played in her “Sleepy Hollow” fandom.

In the interview, Bennett describes how her “fangirl heart just fell in love” with ‘Sleepy Hollow’ when she watched the pilot episode at the San Diego Comic Con last year. She has a great fondness for all of the complex character relationships in the series and she loves the show so much, that she asked to write about. Now Bennett is happy to have FOX and the ‘Sleepy Hollow’ Team’s cooperation so that she can tie her comic into the show’s narrative. Bennet reveals:

The comics take place at different parts of the series. The first two comics are each standalone, self-contained single issues, while the third and fourth will be our two-part finale, so to speak. The first issue takes place early in the season and is a story of magic, the second is in the middle and is a story of myth, and the third and fourth are close to the end, and are the story of a machine.

Side-note: Phil Noto’s cover illustration for ‘Sleepy Hollow’ #1 is far more flattering than the teaser image. Don’t you think?
