NBC’s new medical drama is poised for success. ‘New Amsterdam’ ads have been running for so long, you’d think the show was already on the air. Plus, it has nabbed the coveted post-‘This Is Us’ timeslot on Tuesdays at 10pm. I must admit, it is the perfect pairing.
After screening the first two episodes, I’m officially invested and hooked. The great ensemble cast delivers phenomenal performances. Their characters are all interesting and sympathetic. We will gradually learn more about each one of them, personally and professionally, and their lives are full of surprises. The human and moving medical stories are equally gripping and inspiring.
‘New Amsterdam’ refreshingly restores your faith in hospitals because instead of focusing on the raunchy workplace romances or bizarrely visceral medical mysteries, the show shines a spotlight on what is most needed in medicine: TLC.
Dr. Max Goodwin (brilliantly and heartfeltly portrayed by Ruan Eggold) comes on board to course-correct the struggling hospital as their fourth new medical director in the past five years. He will undoubtedly succeed where others have failed because he lives by one simple code: “How can I help?”
That’s right. This doctor puts ego and statistics aside because his main goal is to help save lives and put the care of patients above everything else. As previews have shown, he boldly fires wasteful departments and financial driven doctors to make room for those who want to do right by their patients. As a result, we are left with a group of compassionate doctors that we already champion and care about. When you go on this journey with them, you’ll laugh, cry and learn.
Enjoy some scoop on the series premiere:
SERIES PREMIERE – Inspired by the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital – the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof – and return it to the glory that put it on the map.
Also starring Freema Agyeman as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Janet Montgomery as Dr. Lauren Bloom, Jocko Sims as Dr. Floyd Reynolds, Tyler Labine as Dr. Iggy Frome and Anupam Kher as Dr. Vijay Kapoor.
Bottom line: ‘New Amsterdam’ is one of Fall TV’s must-see dramas.
‘New Amsterdam’ premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 10pm on NBC.
