Women’s History Month Feature: ‘Kevin (Probably) Saves the World’ is all about girl power, on and off the screen ⋆ Talk TV with Tiffany

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, I’m highlighting the impressive and inspiring amount of girl power displayed on ABC’s ‘Kevin (Probably) Saves the World.’

This is a series created and run by two strong, intelligent and empathetic women, Tara Butters and Michele Frazekas. Together they have developed a heartwarming and insightful show that cleverly explores the human condition and remains grounded in reality despite its supernatural twist. Furthermore, the series refreshingly reveres women as they all help to nurture, support, and guide the male protagonist. Yes, Kevin (Jason Ritter) is technically the “unsung hero” of this story, but that is only because of all the women who bring out the best in him.

From the start, it has been perfectly clear that each woman in Kevin’s life is smart, perceptive, independent, and caring.

His twin sister Amy (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) is basically a genius renaissance woman. She’s an engineer, mathematician, government consultant, esteemed professor, forgiving sister and loving mother. We also see her grieve her husband and find the strength to move on and start a relationship with someone new. Amy rises to every challenge and is a masterful problem solver.

Her daughter, Reese (Chloe East), is wise beyond her years. She isn’t your typical teenager all wrapped up in the superficial aspects of high school. Instead, she is an intuitive and observant young lady who strives to make a difference and treats her peers with kindness. She’s a hardworking student who takes pride in her studies, yet knows how to have a little fun. She doesn’t hesitate to call her uncle out on his wrongdoings and sweetly reassures him when he’s feeling low.

Kevin’s high school sweetheart, Kristin (India de Beaufort), is a motivating teacher, doting daughter, compassionate friend, and an incredibly understanding girlfriend. In our interview, we discuss how Kristin has always been happy and content with her life. We also take a deep dive into the women who surround Kevin. Enjoy our conversation below:

Then there’s diner owner and Tyler’s tough-as-nails boss, Lucille (Lesley Boone). When we learned more about her past, we understand why she puts up a stand-offish front. It is a form of self-preservation because she doesn’t want to show her vulnerability. Although she snaps and treats people like idiots, Lucille looks out for her friends. She urges Tyler to be true to himself. He’s a pure soul and a bit of pushover, so she gives him the nudge he needs to stand up for himself.

Last, but definitely not least, we have our beloved Yvette (Kimberly Hebert Gregory). Kevin’s celestial guardian gradually becomes more human as she spends an extended period of time on earth. We see a seemingly untouchable Warrior of God become vulnerable and very relatable.

In many ways, she embodies the way many women feel on a daily basis. For ages, society has dictated that women must strive for perfection. We are supposed to maintain composure and be there for others at all times without missing a beat.

If you step away for a second and put on your feminist glasses, you could argue that Yvette even exemplifies the old adage, “Behind every successful man is a woman.” She literally is invisible to the world. She pulls off miracles and Kevin looks like a superhero in these strangers’ lives.

I’m not saying that Kevin doesn’t give her credit. He wants to tell everyone she’s there, but he can’t. He’s also very appreciative of all the strong women in his life. He’s always needed them and he’s a better man because of them. When Kevin went off on his own, he became a jerk. He admits that he isn’t proud of the person he was and he has made an effort to become the kind of man that his family, friends and the world needs.

So on this day, take a moment and think about all the women in your life. How have they inspired you? Have you taken any of them for granted? Would you be where you are today without the nurturing support of a grandmother, mother, sister, and/or girlfriend?

We need shows like ‘Kevin (Probably) Saves the World’ because they reflect society at its best. Not only has this heartwarming show inspired viewers to pay it forward and perform random acts of kindness. This series celebrates real women. Women who persevere and triumph over tragedy. They cultivate their minds and share their knowledge with others. They offer unwavering support to loved ones. Each female character on ‘Kevin Probably’ is an incredible role model and superwoman in her own right. I think the world could more female role models, now more than ever.
